Description

The Church community is known for its warm welcome to parishioners and visitors alike, and the Church is open daily throughout the year.

The original 13th century Church was built using predominantly sandstone left from the Roman 'Hadrian's Wall', and it has been adapted and extended several times over the centuries since that date.

Historical information panels covering First, Second and now Third Millennia have recently been installed in the Church. These have been welcomed by the many visitors to the Church, many of whom are walking the World Heritage Site “Hadrian’s Trail”.

Friends of St. Mary's Church

We would like to establish a group of "friends" of St. Mary's to help from time to time with the various things to keep our Community Church in good order. Things like daily opening and closing (it's open all year round), ground works, internal cleaning, flowers, seaonal decorating, and if we had a larger group of volunteers that would help to spread the jobs out. The Church is there for everyone, regardless of whether they actively worship in it and it is part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage site, attracting thousands of visitors annually. Anyone interested in principle in joining, please contact Eve Johnston 576337 or Linda Beattie 525996.
